Going Places @ Your Library: Adult Summer Reading

Greenfield Library Offers Lunch with Author Archer Mayor

In a twist of the traditional summer reading programs for kids, the Greenfield Library is offering a first-ever Adult Summer Reading Program. Going Places @ Your Library: Adult Summer Reading begins this week and will continue through August 31. Participants who want a little extra motivation to read this summer will have the opportunity to be one of three winning readers to enjoy lunch with bestselling Vermont mystery writer, Archer Mayor.

Mayor is the author of fifteen “Joe Gunther” detective mysteries, all set in Vermont. The Chicago Tribune says: “Archer Mayor is producing what is consistently the best police-procedural series being written in America”, while the New York Times lauds his “dazzling” plotlines. He has been a popular speaker at the library’s author series in past years with his fascinating stories about how he researches background information at local police deptartments and coroners’ offices.

To participate, people should go to the Greenfield Library, and fill out a simple “opinion card” after they have finished reading a book. Readers are free to choose their own titles although booklists with a travel theme are also provided. The cards will be displayed as a quick book review for other readers, and will also be entered into the grand prize drawing on August 31st. Three cards will be drawn on that date by library director, Dianne Ryan, who will accompany Mr. Mayor and the three winners to lunch on Friday, September 9th at Applebee’s Restaurant in Greenfield, which has generously offered to provide luncheon for the group.

The aim of the grown-up version of Going Places @ Your Library is to simply remind adults that reading can be a pleasure and a great way to escape in the summer. The armchair traveler can visit different locales and time periods, and enjoy learning about new and interesting places. It also gives parents and grandparents an opportunity to set a good example for children who see adults picking up a book for pleasure or enlightenment.
